You will need:
A scales
A paper
A ink
FIRST: Measure the weight of the paper, record.
SECOND: On the paper, write the letter “R” with the ink.
THIRD: Measure the weight of the paper with the letter written on it with the ink.
FOURTH: Remove the paper, measure the weight of the letter and the ink.
FIFTH: Remove the letter, measure the weight of the ink alone.
SIXTH: Subtract this from the weight of the paper, the paper with the letter and the ink and the letter with the ink, and the resulting sum will be the weight of the letter “R”.

…. Don’t you just need to measure the weight of the paper with and without the inked letter on it?

That does not take into account the additional weight of the ink. The weight of the ink and the letter is of no use to anyone.
