Dr Patti MOTHERFUCKING Smith

Penned upon the 12th of October, 2008

I haven’t been posting, and for a damn fine reason!…which I will tell you tomorrow. Maybe.

In the meantime, though, well, we just got back from Patti Smith performing at Hamer Hall. I even made a point of writing down the setlist as it was played, so I wouldn’t forget:

Redondo Beach
Birdland
Dancing Barefoot
Ghost Dance
My Blakean Year
Beneath The Southern Cross
Ain’t It Strange
Peaceable Kingdom
People Have The Power
Because The Night
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Gloria
Helpless
Rock’n’Roll Nigger

I’m a bit stunned… a bit speechless. What awesomely powerful performers. They sing, they scream, they dance and leap – consider that Patti and Lenny Kaye are both in their sixties, and I couldn’t groove like they do. The Patti Smith Band aren’t just great musicians – and they are, indeed, great musicians. They’re also wise, and propagate wisdom. Patti calls out truths – that the spirit of the universe and everything in it is within us, that love is the absolute root of being – and people hear. Not for nothing do her live performances find their way seamlessly into her albums.

I wasn’t expecting to hear Gloria, I admit. Perhaps Land instead, or Jubilee. But Gloria was right. And all through the night, she took poetic forms she’s used before, that we recognise from her albums, and brings them to new ideas, and weaves them together… wow.

Anyway, yes. I’ll explain where I’m at tomorrow. Probably.

It was an inspiring, poetic and captivating performance. One of those truly special concerts, and indeed one we were both fortunate to attend.

  2. Ms Nix was heard to remark,

Upon the 13th of October, 2008 at 1:43 pm,

Well, I was at the other side of life, watching big tattooed growling metal men from “the south” belt out awesome tunes – in the form of ex pantera gods – DOWN.

I saw patti a few years ago and was blown away.
