Art Continues To Be Everywhere

Posted upon the 20th of February, 2008

I have an awesome artistic friend called Lyndsey. She inspires awe. So does her mum. No, this isn’t a ‘History Today’-style jibe. Her mum, Linda Hughes, has created an amazing line of jewellery, and recently appeared in a beautiful, surreal little piece on ABC Sunday Arts! Have a look. Yay Linda! Yay Lyndsey!

Every Human Being Is An Artist

Posted upon the 15th of February, 2008

Today, we pottered along to the National Gallery of Victoria and saw the exhibition Joseph Beuys & Rudolph Steiner: Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition. Educators both, the bulk of the exhibition is collections of their blackboard drawings from lectures and actions. The effect is fascinating, with Steiner’s lists and diagrams lining the walls, Beuys’s actually heaped in [...]

I Have Hair

Posted upon the 19th of December, 2007

Do you have hair? Yes? No? Either way, get yourself down to The LockWorks! The LockWorks on Little Collins St offer cuts, styles, colours, all kinds of extensions – I’m fairly sure they could install a small aviary or a steam-powered cannon which exclusively targets evangelists for quite a reasonable fee. They also have some [...]

Melburnians!

Posted upon the 26th of August, 2007

Hi ho! Anyone in or around Melbourne who’s thinking of taking up studies might like to pop in to La Trobe’s Open Day today! You might even meet a certain someone helping out at the History booth this afternoon… …or not; a certain someone has the dreaded lurgi. Or, more accurately, the ‘flu.

On A Lighter Note

Posted upon the 31st of July, 2007

Meaghan pointed out to me something that should be entertaining: Candlelight Productions are performing Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. As well as the play, they promise the ‘complete Bunbury experience’ – I’m not sure precisely what that involves, but they invite dressing up and it sounds fun! Candlelight sound like a rather admirable [...]

The Arts of Islam

Posted upon the 5th of July, 2007

If you’re anywhere near Sydney – whether you’re New South Welsh (that’s fun to say) or just passing through – you might like to visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales and see The Arts of Islam: Treasures from the Nasser D Khalili Collection. The exhibition features hundreds of items from the 7th to [...]

If you were excited, you’re now disappointed!

Posted upon the 5th of April, 2007

Gogol Bordello have cancelled their Australian tour due to unforseen circumstances. My theory: Eugene Hütz’s beard license wasn’t valid to bring his moustache into the country. To tide us all over until they can tour proper, here’s a fragment of one of their paticularly poignant works. Nobody is making merry, only trotting scared of boss [...]

Red Door Burlesque!

Posted upon the 28th of March, 2007

MELBOURNE suffers no dearth of quality cabarets, but Red Door Burlesque has really captured my eye. Hosted by both the Hi Ball girls and one of our favourite performers, the quite excessively talented Marawa, Red Door are offering table seating, cocktails and a show featuring dancing, comedy, Marawa’s maginificent flying trapeze and a stream of [...]
