Rippon Lea.

The Romanesque architecture, the lush, peaceful gardens and designs such as this make Rippon Lea seem positively Arcadian.

Whatcha reading? Whatcha reading? is it good?

I haven’t the words to say how much I loved this conservatory. That the owners had always been mad for orchids, a purpose it was still being used for, only confirmed the glee I was already feeling.

Inside the servants’ halls - the old kitchen, laundry, pantry, cool room et al. were down here. They opened up onto the airy courtyard which the conservatory stood above.

We were struck by the practicality of the house - as Andrew (who we thank kindly for the lift home!) noticed, the stained glass windows opened to allow passage of air, and observe these ornate swinging courtyard windows. Even the drainpipes and corrugated iron are part of an aesthetic whole.

The Vases of Masculinity and Femininity!

Looking back at the house from the stables.

Watching the ducks. I feel a great affinity for ducks.

The view from the lookout tower above the waterfall.

The old man of the tree was asleep when we passed. We didn’t have the heart to wake him.
